Shout out...

I just returned the 300 and I just have to give a shout out to Bre and Avis Car Rental (Taylorsville Rd). The car was really great to have and service was great too. Plus they give a great "ULE" discount.

We officially put 6,342 miles on that car. I should see if they want to sell it to me - might get it cheap.

Ellie's haul...

Ellie's been on an amazing journey and brought back a lot of stuff in the process. Pictured here are 10 shirts (not including the 2 t-shirts, 1 sweatshirt and 1 pair of socks that are dirty), 2 mugs - one is R's for his birthday, 1 shot glass for the Newlywed, a Carlsbad mug for Kenya's Grandma, tons of stickers, a few post cards, a Yellowstone throw, 2 souvenir pictures, 2 recycle bags from the major parks and the key chains...I think there are 24 in all - half of those are for my work friend. I told you I spent a lot of $$.

While we're on the subject of Ellie, the original plan to was to take her everywhere and photograph her everywhere. Well, that didn't work out. First, when I got out of the car, I hardly took my purse, it was all about getting the phone and camera into pockets and then being able to move. Ellie would have slowed that process down. Second, I didn't share that plan with R or he would have helped me make sure it happened. So, she saw everything, from the rear view window, and she reaped all these great rewards!

Home safe and sound...

I'm happy to report that we have made it home safe and sound to "Lexington and Louisville". We arrived here just before midnight and R was back in Lexington right at 1:00 AM. I cannot express how thankful I am for this trip and for a friend that was willing to go on it with me. The driving and moving in and out of hotels was definitely a challenge, but I feel that we are stronger for the experience.

I am unhappy to report that my Aunt Pete (that is not a made up name, its not her real name, but it is what we called her) passed yesterday while we were on the last leg of our journey. Aunt Pete is my Dad's sister and she actually passed on my Dad's birthday, 5/27 - which he did as well years ago.

It's pretty obvious to say that I loved my Aunt Pete, she was a memorable and lovable individual. I guess in my heart I am happy for her too because I know she's also home safe and sound. Please say a prayer for my family as we move forward with her memory in our hearts.

What I noticed about ... Idaho

Not much...it was dark. I do know the freaks come out at night at their WalMarts too!

What I noticed about ... Nebraska

Hardest place I have ever tried to buy a flipping state keychain. It was nuts. I don't think people are proud to be from there. I got it though!

Ummmmmmm....

How did they get away with this in Nebraska?

What I noticed about...Wyoming

It's cloudy and depressing...not to mention all the snow. Yellowstone was awesome in what it contains...but snow depresses me. I survived but wish someone who liked snow would have been there for R to traipse around with.

On a note, Yellowstone Inn had only been open for 3 days this season when we got there. How did that happen? We have no clue how we just happened to get there then but it happened. Due to that not everything is open - like the general store probably opened yesterday - so I would recommend going a bit later in the year. The inn is open May to October and then they shut it down completely, no electricity, no plumbing, etc. No wonder it was still snowing...they were barely ready for us.

Second chances...

I am so thankful for second chances and today I had one in getting to see my cousin - SleepyRider - and her husband - MilitaryMan aka WhoNeedsHair.

We decided to forego breakfast this morning and thought we would get something on the road. About an hour in we realized how close we were to Leavenworth, where Sleepy lives. So R convinced me to call; I hesitated because it was kind of early. Turns out they were almost up and wanted us to come by. We got to see their beautiful home and went to the Saltine Bucket for breakfast. We even shared some of our 3,000 pictures!

We got to see a few things in Kansas too... Leavenworth Penitentiary, the soccer field and the NASCAR stadium from the distance. Quick mini-tour fun!

Thanks to Sleepy and Military for taking time for weary travelers! Love you guys!!

Slow going...

We tried to drive straight home from Mt. Rushmore ... Quit laughing!!

The original plan was to stay in Leavenworth, KS with my cousin but we didn't even make it that far. It's a good thing I had already let her know we weren't coming. Sleep took over about 11:30 last night and we stopped in St. Joseph, MO. Thanks HI for the cold shower.

Mickey D's then back on the road!

Happy Birthday to you!

It's R's birthday - well technically 5/25 was....everyone say Happy Birthday! He turned 45 today. Woohoo! For his birthday, we stopped to see Devil's Tower in Wyoming. Did you know Wyoming had the first national park and the first national monument? They do and now, I've been to both.

Drove all day and tried to see Mt. Rushmore's night lighting ceremony. So NOT happening in the pea soup that is the fog of the Black Hills. Ugh!

Calling a do over tomorrow morning...very early.

Oh my! A bear!

Yes, we saw one on the tour this morning. There were also tons of bison in groups and alone.

We learned a lot about making our cameras do a better job - even my little Sony. Now we are waiting on our geyser side room...yawn...I am so tired. There is a nap in my future.

So, where are you two from?

Thats how every conversation seems to start when you are on the road. We aren't asking other folks, they ask us. Of course they do -look at us - they want to know our story. In these cases, I've decided that people like R need people like me to interact with other people in lobbies, on tour buses, at gas stations, at hotel reservation desks, etc. I am the talker, the communicator with a face that says to everyone "talk to me, I promise I will talk back." This happens with the phone too!

For example, yesterday as we were leaving the inn restaurant from dinner, me holding my little take out box in the hope of finishing it before bedtime, a man says "was it worth the wait?" Now nothing said he was talking to me and R was moving right along in the opposite direction, but I turned and raised an eyebrow and he repeated his question. I stopped and walked back to he and his wife (maybe) to answer...thoroughly. Of course I drag R into the conversation by noting his dinner selections too.

In contrast, we stopped at Starbucks drive thru the other day and R was driving. The young barrista dude was trying to chat R up but it just didn't go as the young man planned. R thinks "why is he still talking to me?" LOL

Here's the thing, I personally think we get this more because of people's natural wonder - although truly I talk to everyone. I generally just answer the initial question with "Kentucky" and I am ready to move on. But over the last week and a half I have revised my answer to be more specific and include "Louisville and Lexington". Now I doubt that truly explains anything to anyone but our history is too complicated to explain...worked together, roommates, still buds...nobody's business.

I will however always accept my role as communicator. For R this tends to be a NMA (not my area) topic.

In turn, the other day as we were leaving Yosemite I was photographing a small animal...a lady asks me "what is that?" - of course she does - and I say "I don't know, I am waiting on my friend to come over here so I can find out." It was NMA. FYI R said groundhog and that's kind of true - a marmot. We don't have those at home I don't think but it's NMA so I can't be sure.

YNP

Snowing!!!! And we are out in it ...

Short ride ... trying accommodations...

We made it safely to Yellowstone...Yay! (I am still not completely on board with that spelling by the way...so Yeah!!!) FYI park admission by carload is $25 here. You can actually buy a national parks pass for $80/person but even though we have been to 3 now, we haven't hit the total for one person. That pass is good for a year but I don't see myself doing this again any time soon. I see myself in Florida in the fall if I am lucky.

This was our shortest ride so far but on the way in it started getting cold. We went from 70 in Idaho to 45 here. We were not prepared for cold weather. There are shorts in our bags for goodness sake. Needless to say we have already raided the gift shop. I have Yellowstone socks now.

There was hail along with the rain as we got inside the park. I think the theme of our trip is "rocks"... in all their many forms.

We are at the Old Faithful Inn - tomorrow we will get a geyser side room so that's good. I don't know what we expected - other than Internet service, which we don't have - but I don't think we are getting it. The room is COLD but has a radiator- someone please explain what that is to ShinyLegs. The hotel is older than I expected and the bellman told us to keep our bag of snacks up on the table.......not on the floor. WTH What does he expect will be on the floor? Don't tell me.

Dinner in the restaurant was good but a tad high...$20...which included tip for a cup of roasted red pepper and Gouda cheese soup and 2 trout cakes.

Oh, I haven't said anything about the park...too busy whining like the city girl I am. We stopped at the geysers that were on the way in...not a wow but a whoa when you realize you are on volcanic soil! The pools are lovely but also deadly. There are very nice wooden paths around them so you can get pretty close. R took the photo with his phone to try to capture one of the geysers.

There were bison - or are they buffalo ? - all over the road. They were literally standing in the middle of the road with cars stopped in both directions. Their horns - the animals not the cars - are no joke so you just have to wait them out.

For this time of year there is only 1 tour available and it starts at 545am. It is the "perfect picture" something something and will be on a vintage school bus. Guess who wants to go - hint: it's not really me but I can't come all this way to spend the day in a room with NO TV!

I hope you are enjoying the blog. I am doing as I was told because FootballMom told me I had to write every day so everyone at home would know we are still alive and well! We are and are none the worse for wear! I haven't even had to use the knife that OhioGay#2 found for me!

FYI I am down to about $100 in cash! KenyasGrandma was right that I should have brought a bit more. I should listen to her, she knows her stuff!

Ohhhh I almost forgot a highlight! We stopped for key chains in West Yellowstone, Montana (yes - new state) and there was a SCRAPBOOKING STORE right where we parked! $75 later... Woohoo!

We are loving and missing family, friends and dogs! Take care back there...

44 degrees...

We are in northern Idaho and it is 44 degrees. We have jackets but this may not be good...

What I noticed about...Nevada

There is a lot of it and its sparing. There a few interesting rock formations but lets just say I wasn't upset to get a text from OhioGay#1 to break up the driving monotony...even though I wasn't driving.

What I noticed about...California

Been here before, but never knew it has the most awesome park I have ever been in....boom!

What I noticed about...Arizona

Been there before, so not many surprises, except that it takes a really long time to drive from the Northeast corner to the Southwest corner but there are amazing rock formations all along the way so its totally worth it.

What I noticed about...New Mexico

New Mexico looks almost exactly like Texas in its landscape. Brown.

Ironically, there are very few dark brown people in New Mexico...at least not anywhere that we went. I mean really, you'd think you'd see at least 1...but no...not even in cars on the highway. When we got to Socorro, I saw 3 African people getting in a car together. But that's it.

"Highways" are obviously a foreign concept in New Mexico as well, 2 lane roads...one in each direction...are much more prominent. Paved driveways? Whatever. Dilapidated buildings? Yep, everywhere you look.

What I noticed about...Texas

I'm still not a fan of Texas, even driving across the short part took forever.

To be fair, San Antonio seemed like a nice town when I was there a few years ago, but we didn't go through that part this time.

However, gas was only $3.29 in Lubbock, that's a plus!

What I noticed about...Oklahoma

It went by pretty quick, but the people at the gas stations were nice. :D

Charge everything...

Not financially, but electronically. Did i already say this? Its important so it bears repeating. After a day spent primarily at the house, I used the camera, but I didn't charge the camera. It looked like it had 4 bars. Needless to say that when the videoing and picture taking started, it quickly jumped to 3 and the day was just getting started.

Turns out R had done the same thing...so there was self inflicted stress as the Horseman would say.

While we're on the subject of charging...and this time I mean financially...cash or debit card?

Your choice. The only argument for cash is not leaving your debit (or credit) card number in a trail across the country. The downside of cash is that you might run out and then you'll have to either switch to the card or use the get cash option on a credit card which means you'll have to pay fees.

On this trip I've been the cash chick. R is the debit card guy. I'm still looking at a fair amount of cash considering what's ahead, but I'm also using my $200 in gift credit cards from work that I don't care whether they are recorded here there and everywhere because they will be gone very soon. (I need to go online and check their balances before heading out today).

The only exception to our normal rule is the car/gas credit card that we're using. We'll pay that off when we get back and have a total on the whole thing. In the past we've taken turns at the gas pump, but that can come out a little uneven - especially when gas gets up to $5.15 per gallon...YES CAN YOU BELIEVE IT???? - so we're using this plan to see how it works out.

I don't even want to see the credit card bill, but I must say the 2012 Chrysler 300 is very good on gas. The highest MPA was 31.5. After all the hills yesterday its at about 29 still very respectable for a car as luxurious as this one. I'm just pretty embarrassed about the condition it's in right now. She's filthy! I might have to do something about that even though R thinks I'm crazy...it's a rental after all.

Anyway, on the cash vs. card issue it is a true toss up in my opinion.

Companionship...

On a long drive your second best companion is music, especially because your travel companion(s) will have to sleep at some point. This works fine for R and I because obviously we can both sleep with music blaring at high decibels.

On this trip we've been accompanied by the following artists just to name a few: Tears for Fears, Cyndi Lauper, Anthony Hamilton, Bruno Mars, Natalie Merchant, Seal, Ella Fitzgerald, Beyonce', Bananarama, Alanis Morrissette and the various artists of the soundtrack to Oh Brother Where Art Thou...

Our tastes are all over the board. Thankfully they mesh occasionally.

Glacier Point...really? ABSOLUTELY!

OK, so this morning as we headed out to go to Glacier Point and try to see Half Dome from the park, we took a turn that we hadn't taken yet and ended up on El Portal Road. We'd read about it in Laurel's instructions on how to get here and that it was very scenic. Well, that little drive took about an hour and a half to get through because of all the amazing scenery. One of the great things about Yosemite is that they have made all these pull offs where they know you're going to want a picture, some are small for just one or two cars, others are small parking lots and you just know there's something good in those. The thing is that with all the waterfalls, rockfalls, rocks jutting into the road...there's a pull off every 100 feet or so. It takes quite some time and you just don't want to miss any of it.

Then we headed off to Glacier Point and we had no idea what we'd find there. There was snow on the ground as we rode up the hill...real snow and it was almost 70 degrees outside. WTH? Along the way we stopped at Washburn Point, it was amazing. From Washburn, you could see a number of the mountain ranges - Clark, Liberty, etc. and a view of the Nevada and Vernal Falls. That was the first place we saw people climbing (or hiking, not sure which) Half Dome. They were tiny specs even with the binoculars, but they were there. It was like, "what's that ant doing on that mountain?"

At Glacier Point, you could see almost the entire valley. It was phenomenal. A true WOW moment! Glacier Point kicked everything's butt so far. There you can also see Half Dome, the lower Yosemite Falls, upper Yosemite Falls, the Yosemite Lodge, the Ahwahnee Hotel, Curry Village, Yosemite village, the other falls from Washburn Point, as well as the Overhang Rock, where people have obviously done really stupid things. We chose not to do stupid things...plus they have Overhang "blocked off" a bit...

At the end of the day we made it back to the house and headed out to the "local falls" to "view" the eclipse. Of course it wasn't a full eclipse, so you couldn't really look at it.

We used R's binoculars to reflect it onto our hands, a box or whatever we could find so we could "watch". It was very cool and lasted quite some time.

The road - and I use the term lightly - that we took to get to the spot where R thought it would be good to see the eclipse was ...hmmm, how do I put it...treacherous! It was worse than the dirt road that we were on for the Skywalk...probably because the only things that have been on this road are 4x4s...so its not very wide and it is very rocky. So not the place for a 2012 Chrysler 300 but she rocked it out. The "road" does go right by a lovely waterfall and there's a 6 ton capacity bridge over the creek there, thankfully! I have no idea where that "road" goes, but it seemed to just keep dropping into the abyss.

We didn't stay for the whole eclipse because...well, we had to get back up that road! We took folding chairs from the house with us and when we got back and got them out of the trunk and shut the trunk...dust flew everywhere...this was NOT a road!

United Logistics Enterprises....

Just a thought...

Last week, I heard from Edward Lover about changes on the work front. Of course there are changes, I'd been gone for more than 48 hours. That's how it is? ShinyLegs and I experience it a lot... "2 days!! REALLY?"

R just happens to work for the same company in a different city and we've decided that by the time we get back after 2 weeks, they might just have renamed, restructured and repurposed the entire company! R decided on a name...United Logistics Enterprises...I think it could work. You know, everything we do is for the enterprise and of course you know how we feel about logistics!

We shall see..

Week 2 begins...

Its kind of amazing that we've seen so much in just 1 week. We are marvelling at the accomplishment and particularly devastated that we are already up to 1,190 pictures between us and that doesn't count yesterday. R is thinking the 13 hour car ride to Twin Falls will be a good time to pare down! I'm still trying to work out a good place to share them on the "internets". It will probably be Snapfish so I can just print from there, but I can't load now. One of the few drawbacks of the house we're in is the Internet is good but not fabulous and the streaming youtube videos we watched last night have us down to "dial up" speed. UGHHH! Not good at all...

Well, since I was sick yesterday and R made it back safely from his hike, today we are going to do Glacier Falls and try to get really good pictures of Half Dome. That thing is massive even in the distance so no telling what it will look like when we get up close.

Thanks to good friends back home... Chewy and Edward Lover ...we heard about the eclipse that will be visible on the West Coast tonight. Seriously, there has been no news watching by me at least - so there's no way I would have heard about it! We're trying to determine the best place to see it - hopefully - this evening and we think we have a plan for that...yeah! So exciting!

Wear and tear...

I think the fast pace of travel is getting to me...probably R too. Today I woke up with pains in my stomach, sharp ones. R had/has a sore throat. Just peachy...

For now its a relaxy day, with little to no plans, but I'm feeling much better and thinking adding Hetch Hetchy to the plan isn't a bad idea. Will find out how R feels about that addition when he returns from his hike. Thank goodness for text messaging and working cell phones in the valley, I know he's doing OK.

I am sitting outside enjoying the wonderful moderate climate by the creek right now, but the insects are challenging my calm. Just reminding myself that everything serves a purpose and I would not want the bad karma of killing an insect or anything else in the Yosemite Valley!

Yosemite..WOW

Yes, it is truly WOW worthy!

Today was the latest I've slept in...6:30 am...imagine that. For those of you who know me, you're probably laughing your head off! I am not a morning person, what is California doing to me?

The first part of the plan for today was to do the "park"; there are tons of pull offs with great views of all of the things you'd ever want to photograph and about 150 other things you didn't even know existed that you must also get. The plan worked pretty well, but there are a few items - Half Dome, Glacier Point and some local waterfalls, local to Foresta where we're staying that is - that haven't been captured. Those are for tomorrow.

The second part of the plan was to do the tram ride in the Mariposa Grove, the forest of the big Sequoias. Success! by the way the tram ride is $26.50 per person! They don't tell you that before hand. Every time its mentioned there's just a $ in place of the cost...and only one! They should be like the cruiselines and use $, $$ or $$$ depending on how expensive the activity is...this would have been a $$.

We ate dinner at the famous Wawona Hotel. I think it's famous? It was very good...crab cakes for me, meatloaf for R...I should say half a cow, that meatloaf was huge! and yes, I probably am fattening my friend up a bit because for dessert the waiter - Dave - recommended bread pudding. Bread pudding then! We figured if anyone was going to do a bread pudding right, it would be this old victorian hotel. It did not disappoint. I only had a tiny bit, but there was none left on the plate when we walked out.

Last evening, about 6ish we headed out for "gas and food"... HA! Gas we found in about 6 miles - although someone told us it would be 15...we were thankful for the 6. Food was nowhere to be found - the gas pumps are open 24/7 at Cranes Flat, but the store closes promptly at 5PM. FYI...gas is $4.99 per gallon inside the park at Cranes Flat and at Wawona, the only 2 places we've seen. YES $4.99 and we were even lower on gas last night than the night before. The additional complication is because there are about 100 miles of park to deal with, you can't get out and to something cheaper in a reasonable amount of time especially when you're almost on E.

A few more travel rules...

     7) GAS UP! - Don't let the tank go below 1/4 - you'll just feel better knowing you have some gas! (hehe)
     8) READY FOR YOUR CLOSE UP! - Take all the cameras, smart phones and chargers for everything when you leave the house to take pictures. You never know what's going to run out of battery life and there's little worse than NOT being able to take a picture in the park.

Travel Rule #5

I think ... I may have lost count... While traveling through the great state of Yosemite Park - seriously its huge - bring a snack. The drives from one part of the park to another are daunting!! You will need something to keep you awake especially if you are too chicken to drive the hills - like me! ...so far..,

The word "WOW"

...will not be used for anything relating to work craziness, good food or other such nonsense ever again. It is the only word that keeps coming to mind as we ride through Yosemite. Poor Mt. Rushmore - how will it ever compete.

Showers...

I just have to share this...

First - 3 blogs in one day...woohoo!

Second... R took a shower first today and proceeded to tell me that each spray of the shower head works independently of the other, so you have to move around a lot. So I go take a shower and I am laughing sooooo hard because he is absolutely right! There are even 3 settings and it was still a challenge.

Just goes to show how spoiled I am at home!

At least this one gets the soap off...others we have experienced you feel like a walking dial soap advertisement!

Ticked off...

Just realized we probably went about 30 miles out of our way last night.

We only came to Victorville because I was hoping to stay with, or at least see, my cousin who lives here, but she's out of town or was planning to be out of town, at this point I'm not sure which one is true. So we could have stayed in Barstow last night. They have a HIX (by the way, that's Holiday Inn Express) on Route 66...I love Route 66, reminds me of the movie CARS.

Which reminds me that R says that I relate everything to Disney movies, I had to correct him though because it is actually Pixar or Disney movies and if he thinks I'm bad, he should meet ShinyLegs!

Anyway...Barstow...darn! and now we have to go another 30 miles to get back on the road we would have already been on...ARRRRGGGHHH!!! (insert ticked off smiley here)

Splat!

That's the sound I heard last night as we hit the virtual "been in the car too long" wall. Picture this....we were seriously low on gas with the light on and the needle on the wrong side of E, we were in a shady neighborhood, we were experiencing the first wrong directions issue of the trip, we probably had to go to the bathroom, we were hungry and someone who shall remain namelesss was having the same feeling I'd had driving two nights before ... a small case of the "JUST GET ME THERE"'s!

We'd used up all the $4.77/GAL gas we got in Williams, AZ, which by the way - thanks to Williams - is the HIGHEST we have paid anywhere! Talk about a tourist trap! We had barely gotten there on fumes and had no choice about putting something in the tank because we had a 4 hour drive ahead of us. As hybrid owners, neither of us have ever paid that much for a tank of gas ... even if you put our cars together. It was traumatizing.

The hotel we're in now...HIX Hesperia, CA...didn't pull up in the GPS when I first put it in my phone, then it did and I picked a location...turns out that was NOT the location of the hotel, but a street that at some point stops being paved! What the... That part was my fault because I'd meant to go back and check the address again before we got to this part of the trip, but it just didn't happen. To R's credit, he did mention that its not like I didn't have 15,000 other things I was trying to remember, plan, fix, set up, etc. in the process.

Bathroom after a 3 hour car ride...so obvious.

Hunger after a 3 hour car ride...yep, you said it...obvious.

Tiny hissy fit...to be expected.

We persevered however and found gas for $3.39 a gallon, then ate at a restaurant called "Bakers: Close to Home" which was right in front of the hotel. We were only able to eat in relative calm because the hotel was so close...like they might as well have shared a parking lot.

I'm glad we made it and now...can't wait to get on the way to Yosemite! I want to see the Sequoias!!! We think they will be on the drive in, but we really aren't sure. We have a lot of time to get this 6.5 hours done and we'll probably leave early if yesterday is any indication, so this begins the liesurely - at least somewhat leisurely - part of the trip. Yeah! We have survived...

What day is it? PHEW!

What time is it?

I can't be trusted with time right now. You'd think after 3 days in the same time zone that wouldn't be the case, but I woke up this morning at 4 AM (their time) like it was 7AM our time and I needed to go to work and R seems to be doing the same. It worked for us today because we got to the Skywalk about 2 hours earlier than I'd originally planned. Of course, who knew the Skywalk could take an entire day? If you plan a visit there...give it time. We stayed until 3PM after getting there at about 11AM and we still didn't see everything.

The ride from Williams, AZ to the Skywalk took about 3 hours and the second to the last part of the trip was a 9 mile ride on dirt roads through the mountains. It was a real special treat and I'm glad we had a rental car! The rocks and dust being thrown by the big tour buses and cars that wanted to go faster than the speed limit was crazy. We kept hearing this clinking sound on the undercarriage...scary!

I bought our actual Skywalk tickets online but we also had to get tickets for admission to the reservation. The SW is not part of the National Parks System, so those passes - if you have them - don't apply. Once you are as far as you can go, they shuttle you to the actual location on buses. That shuttle ride is free by the way and if you don't want to drive your car on the gravel road - although, its really not that bad, kind of an adventure in itself - you can take a shuttle further away in the town of Meadowview for that part, but you'll still have to take the second shuttle.

There are 2 stops on the east side of the terminal - for lack of a better word, I should really say "tourist trap" because there are all kinds of things to buy in there - the first stop is Eagle Point and the Skywalk, the second is Guapo point. If you look closely at the image of Eagle Point, you can see the wings spread in either direction and the body of the eagle in the center.

Its amazing. This picture was taken while we were still on the bus trying to get to it, but it has almost the whole eagle in it.

We spent a lot of time at that first stop taking pictures at Eagle Point and then going through the line to get to the SW. They give you a complimentary locker to put ALL of your personal belongings in, you see everyone walking around with an orange key fob on their wrists. You also have to put on little blue booties to protect the glass, but its still getting scratched up from what our tour guide showed us. They take pictures for you while you're on the SW and then of course you can buy them later, which I obviously did...once in a lifetime, remember?

There is a third bus stop, but you have to go back to the terminal for it and take a different bus. It is on the west side of the terminal and is the reservation itself. There are food stops at all three, but the reservation is the only location with the sit down, air conditioned restaurant. Everything else is walk up to the window, find a picnic table with an umbrella (good luck!) and have at it.

It took a really long time to get a bus to the second stop and we were already late on our schedule by then, so we skipped it and went back to the terminal. R was looking for a magnet for his sister, so we got that then headed back out the dirt road. We ended up within 3 miles of Hoover Dam on our way to Victorville/Hesperia, CA, so we stopped because R had never seen it. I've been there before, but he got some great pictures that I'll share eventually. Maybe while I'm in one place for 4 days....

OK, so we've been in the car for 4 or 5 or 6 days off and on now, so I have some travel rules to share with you...

     1) DRIVER RULES! - The driver always controls the music or in R's case, the talk radio (I sleep during that).
     2) WE'RE STOPPING, YOU'RE PEEING! Multi use stops are preferred - gas, food, restroom - that's the way to go.
     3) CAREFUL! - Never drink without a straw while travelling a winding road - this can result in lemonade in your shelf!
     4) SAVE THOSE VACATION CARDS! - Vacation cards are imaginery cards to be used in place of words that you have forgotten because your brain is in vacation mode. When you forget - present your vacation card for assistance or just to pass altogether on the comment you were attempting to make. NOTE: Negotiation proceedings are occuring to determine the true allotment of vacation cards per day. I mean really, just five? We've both already blown through those and we're not even half way through the trip!

Walked the sky!!

We got to the Skywalk early and it still took several hours but we did it! Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.
I can pretty much bet you that everyone who has visited the Skywalk has a picture like this with their arms up. Maybe not all of them were crazy enough to buy them.

You can see the Colorado river behind us in the second one. Small brown spot, bottom left.

The Grand Canyon...

No words...

Once in a lifetime...

I have to say how thankful I am that we're doing this trip. This is truly a once in a lifetime journey and I need to enjoy every minute of it. I don't know that I ever thought it would happen, so that makes it even more special.

I am tired. R is already asleep and its only 11:16 PM here. Did you know that the state of Arizona does not recognize daylight savings time so they are on Pacific time from April through October every year? This time zone thing is really messing with me. We've been in at least 2 time zones every day...its nuts.

So today we took the long road to Socorro, just to see where R went to school. We left at 5:30 AM and had breakfast there about 9, then rode around for a bit and headed to Four Corners. Have you seen this wikitravel site before? I hadn't...found it on the phone today...it was very helpful in getting us directly to the park.

I wasn't sure we would make it...all the GPS instruments we have ... about 4 in total - that's a story for another time ... gave us different arrival times. One said 6:30, one said 5:30, one said 4:00... we decided to go with that one, even though routes were similar. When we were about 75 miles out, we stopped at a convenient store and I ended up buying a map - yes, Virginia, a real map! - because it actually had the monument location marked on the map.

There is no address for the monument, so if you ever go...know this...get to Framington, AZ, then stay on US-64 West until you get to Teec Nos Pos (teak nose pose) and make a right on the road after you see the city sign...there's a gas station on the corner, go almost 6 miles and you're there. Its a $3 per person entry fee and it is not what I expected. I think I thought there'd be a huge visitor center, but not yet. There are small vendor boths on 3 of the 4 sides - Utah is still working on theirs - and there are vendors of shirts, jewelry, etc. in most of them. I did notice there were only 2 vendors on the Arizona side. It seems this might be a pretty new development.

There were also 2 Navajo frybread vendors there...we had to try it. It comes with up to 3 toppings... powdered sugar, cinnamon and honey... we got cinnamon and honey. The vendor told me she doesn't charge extra for more than one topping, but while R was waiting for our food, the next set of folks that came up got all 3 toppings and she charged them fifty cents more. I told him we got the BG discount...now whether that's the "big girl" or "brown girl" discount, I'm not sure!

After we left there, we headed to Williams, AZ and the Grand Canyon Train Hotel. The drive wasn't bad while it was daylight and you could see all the amazing rock formations around you. The minute it got dark, I got sleepy and tired. Needless to say, I'm glad to be here and settled.

R is playing a game called "parallel kingdom" on his phone. Its where you can inhabit areas, claim them for your own and its based on actual maps, not fictional ones. So guess what happens every time we stop somewhere for longer than 5 minutes? He's chopping down trees and planting flags. He forgot to try to claim Four Corners though...he was bummed.

By the way...today we saw snow in the hills of northern New Mexico...honestly, probably more snow than I've seen this year in KY.

We're holding down the west coast...please take care of the East!

Socorro

New Mexico... Where R spent his beginning college years. Today is on the road almost constantly an stop for tourist activities. The roads in NM mirror Texas...long long long. They have "roadside tables" here and there so obviously these people eat but they never go to the restroom! Thank goodness for McDonalds.

Hail in New Mexico...what?

So, its 3 minutes to midnight here and I said I was going to post every day, technically...its still the same day that I'm posting about as I start this post. I'll take a technicality if I have to! Plus, I haven't slept yet...so there...

The plan was to get up and be out by 9am today (Sunday)...yeah, whatever. We had breakfast downstairs [Travel Tip --> Holiday Inn = you pay for breakfast separate from your room, Holiday Inn Express = breakfast is included! It's a bit more than continental, there's sausage, pancakes, biscuits, bagels, mini-muffins, cereal, milk, coffee, yogurt, fresh fruit...pretty good fixin's if you ask me.] After breakfast we sluggishly made our way back upstairs to get ready to head out. I think the drive was catching up to us. It was more like 10:15...ish by the time we got in the car.

GPS to Carlsbad Caverns unequivocally sucks. No exceptions...VZ Navigator, Sprint Navigation and MapQuest...all lame. They take you to the Carlsbad National Park Visitors Center, which is not in the park at all, but about 28 miles north of it. If you leave there, heading to where the caverns signs send you...GPS tells you to make a u-turn and go back because you're wrong...although you are very right. Needless to say...we followed the signs. It was an easy ride from where we're staying - all on one road. At least it wasn't bad once we started ignoring the technology.

Park entrance fee is $6 per adult that you pay once you're in the visitor center. We decided to do the "natural entrance" to the park (instead of the elevator entrance - ticket covers either). The natural entrance is about 2 miles of winding pathways at about a 30 degree angle most of the time. It was a true challenge on your ankles for sure but totally worth the scenery. It took us about 2 hours to do the entrance. I was pooped and a bit over the caverns at that point. So when we got to a crossroads where the elevators and rest rooms are, I decided to take a break. Ratac (to be further known as "R" so I don't have to type so much) said, "I'll go on and get some more pictures and meet you back here." Dummy that I am, I say "OK" and off he goes. About 10 minutes later, I looked at the directions board again and was thinking I should have just gone with him. Ten minutes after that I was thinking, "I have to p..." so I went to the restroom. The whole time I was concerned that I was going to be lost in the caverns forever and he wasn't going to find me. I didn't have my cell phone, he had the car key. It was an awful feeling. Turns out he was having the same thoughts about coming back to get me. It won't happen again...no separating while underground at all. I promise.

We rode the elevator back up from the Big Room and the operator told me its about 750 feet up to the top. He had us look down between the elevator and the floor to see the little spec of light that represented where we had been.

Amazing. I used the word "WOW" a lot today. The caverns are insane. R asked if I'd been to Mammoth Cave. The answer...yes, when I was a child but I did NOT go inside the cave. I took that bus trip all the way there and then freaked out. I can see why I did, but good news is I didn't this time.

We did some gift shopping and eating in the cavern restaurant, then decided to head to Roswell, NM so we could see what didn't happen and where it didn't happen. It was interesting. They don't ham it up half as much as we thought they would, but still some interesting places. There we shopped at Roswell Landing - nice place for t-shirts and they are open late, even on Sunday. The guy there looked alien-esque if you ask me, but he was a very helpful man and obviously a local. He knew some great restaurants in the area and we took his suggestion of tia Juana's - food was great.

Its been an eventful weather day here. We had rain as we were walking into the park, then huge clouds and rain on the way to Roswell, then HAIL on the way back from Roswell. When we first saw the hail it was on the roadway and looked like there had been trucks salting the road, but then we noticed it was on the shoulder. Why would they salt a shoulder? Then R says "I think its hail..." Cue me with the "are you nuts?" look. So, then all I could think was that I wanted to pull over and see...so we did. It was hail.

I took a picture, maybe I'll get to load it before the trip is over! I have over 100 pictures just from the caverns today but I am having issues trying to decide where to put them so you can see them. I think I'm going to have to start a Flikr account because links from Snapfish or the others don't work with Blogger...hey Google, FIX IT! I did add a photos page to the blog to load some...but this is a serious design flaw. Who did the user testing on this site? Can I see the requirements doc?

One more thing, of course we've been rained on today, more than once, plus it was cold, moist and somehow sometimes warm in the caverns, so my hair is NOT at its best. (I wonder if I'll still have a friend named Michael by the time I get home...arrrrghhhh! I want BRAIDS!) Anyway, we're leaving the caverns, in the car on the way to Roswell and R says... "Have you loooooked in a mirror?" Cue me with the "oh my goodness, is it that bad?" face! I said yes, and he said "oh ok, I didn't want you to be shocked when you saw your curls were...well...gone." I breathed a sigh of relief, yes, I knew, they were gone and I'm going to be OK with that. LOL

Here's a tip...

Caverns were amazing! Wish I'd worn my pedometer - needless to say not worried about walking the treadmill at the hotel. Heading to Roswell, NM now...just because we can.

Texas

Advice...when preparing to drive through Texas be sure to have completed all bodily functions, have gas in the car as well as food and water! It does not matter which part you cross, there are very long stretches of nothingness...how do they stand it?

Rolling...

We rolled through St. Louis about 3AM home time and now it looks like we are about 75 miles outside the Oklahoma state line. Woohoo a new state!

Can't believe it...

Travel day has arrived!

Ratac's 8hr day request was obviously denied and it looks like Christmas on his truck but since I didn't plan for time zone changes in our travels maybe that's not an issue? Or are google maps smart enough to factor in time zone changes? If I have time today --- haha I am so funny --- maybe I will check it out.

I have decided to lug the laptop along - we are traveling by car so no need to ever have the moment where I go "Wish I'd brought the..." for anything.

Plans today are to recheck the packing - I might be splitting my clothes into 2 weeks and a bag for each to add some wiggle room, as it stands, I have NONE - get the car, get my hair done and come home and sleep. It's a workable plan ... We shall see how it goes.

By the way ... Blogging from the phone ... Wooohooo!

A Cup of Happy

It's official! Vacation has begun and I had to stop and get a small cup of happy to celebrate. Large cups of happy are reserved for "dealing with stupid stuff" days.

By the way in case you don't know, happy is in the form of a caramel frappe from Ronald's house. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Pre-packing...

Today is the day I lay the suitcases out and see what falls into them...If I do this far enough in advance, I have a much better shot at not forgetting something that I think is really important for the trip. So things like the camera, the extra phone charger, memory cards and nightgowns - which for some reason I have a tendency to forget, I guess I'm not thinking about sleeping - are already in the bags laying on my bedroom floor. This activity is just a pre-cursor to the detailed list...so don't get me wrong, I'm still retentive about it! Any packing strategies? I'm always up for new ideas.

The key chain collection...

I was talking to a friend at work yesterday...Leigh :D...and we have something in common, we collect key chains. Its funny because its something we've both been doing since we were in middle school. I think I picked up key chains because they are small and fairly inexpensive. I've probably never paid more than $7 for one.

While I was in school getting my master's degree for two and a half years (Webster 2002), I felt very grounded and not in the good way. There was always a paper or presentation due in the next few days or weeks, so there wasn't much time to travel. It wasn't like I'd traveled much before that, but for some reason graduation spurred the travel bug for me. I had to get out and be on the move. So I have quite a few key chains from the states (19) and countries (4) I've visited. The trick here is that I have to have visited the state to be able to add the key chain to the collection.

After talking with Leigh yesterday, I realized I need to go through my list before we leave so I can be sure to get all the ones I need...I'm also going to pick up some for her, she doesn't have crazy requirements for her collection...lucky her! Here are the ones I think I'll be able to get on the trip...in order

  • Missouri
  • Oklahoma
  • New Mexico
  • Colorado
  • Utah
  • Arizona
  • Idaho
  • Montana
  • Wyoming
  • South Dakota
  • Nebraska (Technically we won't be in Nebraska, but I-11 runs right next to the state line in Iowa, so I hope we are close enough that I can count this one)
  • Iowa
  • Kansas
Have you noticed I like lists?

Hey parents, I highly recommend key chains as a collection for your kids...they take up a lot less room than stuffed animals...no offense Ellie!

Countdown....

I am trying so very hard to keep my mental countdown to myself. I don't want to be obnoxious, but I am so ready for vacation I can hardly stand it...I think Ellie is excited too! I've always been one to not want to rush God's work...so I need to chill out. But don't you think He really knows how I feel anyway? and if He was here He would just say "Oh for goodness sake...just jump up and down already!"

I have not packed or thought much about what I'm packing since I printed the list. Oh...do you know about the list? I have an OFFICIAL PACKING LIST...it lists all my toiletries, electronics, sections for my clothes, a to do list, etc. It helps me stay on track when I'm heading out of town and YES I am that much of a nerd.

I have a question...Ladies...what do you do with your underwire bras? They can't really be folded...they take up room for no reason. All I can think of is stuffing them with socks or underwear...sad. Open to suggestions....
